PENNSYLVANIA SOCIETY OF TEACHING SCHOLARS

REQUEST FOR NOMINATIONS

SUZANNE BROWN EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD – 1998-9

This annual award will be given to an outstanding educator in higher education. The winner will receive a plaque and each winner’s name will appear on a perpetual plaque to be hung in the Dixon Center in Harrisburg, PA.

The Award Committee looks for the following documented criteria.

  1. Demonstrated influence in interesting students in their field of study. (Documentation could include papers or projects completed by students; evidence of students presenting or publishing papers; actions by the teacher, both curricular and cocurricular, intended to increase student interest and involvement in the teacher’s field of study.)
  2. Development of effective teaching methods, courses, and/or teaching materials. (Documentation could include description and sample methods, materials, course syllabi, and evidence of their successful utilization.)
  3. Outstanding performance as a classroom teacher. Documentation could include student evaluations (THREE sets only please), evaluative observations by colleagues, teaching awards, and other forms of prior recognition.
  4. Commitment to the encouragement of good teaching in higher education. (Documentation could include research in and publications about college teaching, involvement in campus-wide efforts to encourage good teaching such as teaching centers, and descriptions of mentoring activites).

DIRECTIONS FOR SUBMISSION OF NOMINATIONS:

The cover sheet accompanying the nomination should include: Nominee’s Name, Address, and Telephone number; and the Nominator’s name, address, and telephone number; and the Name, address, and telephone number of the campus administrator who should be notified if the nominee receives the award.

DEADLINE # 1 for submission of materials: Nominator to send by Friday, Dec. 18, 1998 (post marked, please) -- Name, Address, Telephone Number; Email Address of the Nominee. This will enable Dr.Mary A. Dugan to contact the nominee for documentation.

DEADLINE # 2: Jan. 18, 1999 for the Nominee to submit ALL documenation to Dr. Mary A. Dugan.


Materials to be submitted: Nominee’s educational history; professional work history; a list of memberships in professional and honorary organizations; 3-5 letters of recommendations; and a brief narrative (400-500 words) of the nominee’s achievements meeting the above award criteria.
