Thai Palm Leaf Craft
Traditional Folk Art
By Kitichai Tepprasit
Kitichai uses bai lan, coconut palm leaves and other natural materials to create charming arrangements of life-like lizards, scorpions, butterflies and other insects. Bai lan is the leaf of a fan palm native to tropical mountains. It has been used since ancient times to create Buddhist manuscripts as well as for the traditonal decorative craft practiced by Kitichai.

TON LAN (Corypha umbraclifera)
The fan palm has many traditional uses in Thailand. Here it is grown on the grounds of a Buddhist temple, where the leaves,
bailan, were used to create  manuscripts of the Buddha's teaching.
Ton Lan will bloom only once after 100 years. Then, it will appear to die, but a new palm will rise from its roots
