Welcome to the IMMY AWARDS ! To be honest, I wasn't paying attention and truly don't recall when the original awards ceremony was held. There have been three past ceremonies, in January 1998 (we think), July 1998 and March 7, 1999. They are now held (when they are held) in a user room named the "Pagan Lake Ampitheatre" in Yahoo (the last ones were under Socitey & Culture - the history of the IMMYs is becoming the history of Yahoo Chat itself!). I just put them on when people start asking for them *grin*.

For those of you who weren't at the previous ceremonies and/or don't know what the IMMY AWARDS are, here is some historical background on them. They were not named the IMMYs out of ego (well, maybe a LITTLE *grin*) but as a play-on-words, tongue-in-cheek takeoff on the big awards shows so prevalent in "the Biz" (ie. Oscars, EMMYs). The entire concept took form during a playful evening at Pagan Lake, when folks were kidding around. The result of this brainstorming was the first annual IMMY AWARDS. The ceremony itself took place in a special users room created in the Society & Culture section of Yahoo! and was a small production (that lasted about 5 hours!). My personal hope is that it was just plain fun for everyone. I don't think of it as a popularity contest OR a slamming competition, but an opportunity for us to have fun with each other and to enjoy each other's chat idiosyncrasies. Personally, I think of the folks at Pagan Lake as a sort of "family", and view the IMMY AWARDS as an opportunity for that once-a-year family reunion. They are an extension and a recognition of our "community". I hope you will view it in the same way.

This year there will be a special look to the IMMY herself, in honor of the Millenium bruhaha - yes, yes, I KNOW it's not really the true millenium, but I'm a sucker for pop culture fads!

A new feature of the IMMY AWARDS last year was an award/banner in .gif format which you could proudly (or not so proudly) display on your webpages if you were a winner! (Talk about ego!!) There will be a new banner this year, featuring the special Millenium IMMY look.
