The odds against mind existing are staggeringly high. However, the fact remains that we do exist, if only for a fleeting second in the grand scheme of the universe. Is this due to God, or are there just an infinite number of planets and universes, one of which happens to contain life? One needs to seriously inspect the religious implications of all that science tells us. We also need to come to grips with why the world we live in is so plagued by evil. If there is a God, is He active in our lives or inactive? Is anything ever "random?" There are huge implications of any answer to this question, but no solid answers can be given by science or religion, or even by the two working together, but they can at least focus on and identify the appropriate questions to be asked by each. "Neither science nor religion arrives at certainties. They at best predict probabilities.26 The most fundamental question, "Why are we here?" is only answered temporarily by science, but the underlying reasons for the existence of science as it is can better be addressed by religion. We can only see so far with through science, but nothing proclaimed by religion is verifiable. Thus, both traditions are needed for the most complete understanding of the universe.
