Apartheid in South Africa

Unit Description and Rationale

This unit is designed for students to take a deeper look at the problems facing South Africa and how they were resolved. South Africa has spent the last three centuries fighting Apartheid. Apartheid was a legal system of segregation and classification concerning all aspects of the lives of the people. This unit will look at these problems and give the students a chance to explore the situation in South Africa and give their insight on the problems and possible solutions.

Grade Level and Course

This unit is designed for high school (9-12) world history classes. It could possibly be used in a geography class if slightly modified.

Objectives

The students will analyze how and why one system of segregation started in a part of the world.

The students will comprehend the fact that although we are all different and can be put into different classifications, we all share commonalties that bind us together.

The students will assess and evaluate the importance of civil rights and the consequences that arise when those issues aren't addresses.

The students will acquire a working knowledge of Nelson Mandela and what he represents.

The students will grasp the complexity of the Apartheid system and how it influenced his life.

The students will examine the efforts of Nelson Mandela toward civil rights in South Africa.
