About Dave Mundy

Dave Mundy is the Managing Editor of The Katy Times in Katy, Texas, a suburb located about 25 miles west of Houston. During his four years with The Times, his investigative reporting has carried his 8,500 subscribers from the sometimes-combative Board of Trustees meetings of the 30,000-student Katy Independent School District to the thick of the fight in the state capital of Austin over the development of the state's new curriculum guidelines, and on to Washington, D.C., and the Clinton Administration's agenda to nationalize control of the public-school system in the 50 states. During those four years, The Times has won more than 30 awards from the Texas Press Association, Texas Gulf Coast Press Association, South Texas Press Association and the Houston Press Club -- and on Sept. 25, 1998, Dave's in-depth reporting was cited as the Best Coverage of Education in the nation in 1998 by the National Newspaper Association.
A 24-year veteran of journalism, Mundy has worked professionally with a number of Texas newspapers: the Baytown Sun, Bayshore Sun, Deer Park Progress, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Houston Post and the Rosenberg Herald-Coaster. In addition, he served six years as a Combar Correspondent for the United States Marine Corps, where he won three Thomas Jefferson Awards for superior military journalism.
Over the years, Dave's columns have ranged from the serious to the silly, but the ones his fans love the most concern his rambunctious chihuahuas, LtCol. Smedley D. Butler and SgtMaj. Russel J. Chihooiehooie. He published a compilation of those columns in his first book, which can be ordered and downloaded on-line at White Knight Publishing. His coverage of the Texas education debate from 1995-97 led to the publication of his first hardback book, Duh! Texas: A Case Study in Educational Takeover, which can be ordered through Barnes & Noble or can be downloaded directly from the publisher, Abique Books. A release of Duh! in paperback is scheduled this fall.
Dave hung up the trappings of career bachelorhood on Feb. 14, 1998, when he married a really loving and understanding woman, Peg. The couple have two grown daughters, Jennifer and Angela, and until they get some grandchildren, they'll have to make do with three chihuahuas -- Smedley, Rusty and the newest addition, Sugar Baby.
You can contact Dave via email at either his Katy Times account (katytimes@fbtc.net) or his home account (pegcap@fbtc.net). Federal agents are asked to assault his house using medieval weapons only.
