In Wicca, there are two main types of Wiccans: coveners and solitaries. Coveners are those who work with other people in their rituals; these groups of people are called covens, and the people in them coveners. Contrary to popular belief, thirteen is not the hard-and-fast rule for the number of people in a coven. It can vary extensively from group to group. Solitaries are those who work alone, without a group of people. Often, solitaries are alone because they cannot find others to work with, but sometimes, it is by choice, because they prefer freedom over the coven's structure. There are pros and cons to both ways, but it is essentially your choice (unless you don't know anyone, in which case you are a solitary whether you like it or not). I think of myself as a solitary because I do the majority of my rituals alone. However, in the past few years, the local Pagans have begun to network, and it's quite a kick to join the loose-knit group of friends for a ritual. Covens can raise a phenomenal amount of power. Yet, wherever there are people, there's the possibility of conflict.
