SAS 10th anniversery "High technology manufacturing enterprises are on the increase in Singapore and often the role of materials in these industries is crucial to their success. As a result there is a growing demand for competent Materials Engineers who have a sound understanding of the synthesis and processing, structure, properties, and performance of materials, and their inter-relationships."

Job Opporcunities for Materials Engineers

Prospects for Materials Engineers

Like engineers in the other disciplines, Materials Engineers can look forward to career advancements, limited only by their personal drive and motivation. In short, as the saying goes," The sky's the limit.

· Technical Progression
From Materials Engineer to Senior Engineer to Principal Engineer (equivalent to Manager) to Senior Principal Engineer (equivalent to Senior Manager). Similarly, the progress can begin from an R&D Engineer to Senior R&D Engineer to Principal R&D Engineer.

· Management Progression
From Engineer to Senior Engineer (Assistant Manager) to Manager to Senior Manager to Assistant General Manager to General Manager/Managing Director to CEO of the company. However, it must be noted that managerial progression requires more than technical expertise. Additional management knowledge (such as an MBA course) is usually required. Furthermore, management positions require people to deal with interpersonal rather than technical problems. Most Materials Engineers are likely to work through QA/QC departments, production or purchasing before they are being promoted to the Department Manager. After further studies and upgrading, they may end up to be the CEO of an MNC or the boss of their own company.
