The Gods and Goddesses of the Slovak People
 

 BOG   A general Slavonic word for a god, from the Persian Bagi and the sanskrit bhaga,
 indicating richness and power.

 BABAYAGA  Goddess of death and regeneration. Baba Yaga can appear as either an old
 crone or a beautiful young woman. Baba Yaga lives in darkness and eats people, but she has the
 gift of prophecy as wel
 

 BANNIK  (Slavonic)Domestic Spirit of the WashHouse,who had to be propitiated but who
 could be questioned about the future.
 
 
 BELOBOG   Also BELBOG, BELUN The White God, the god of the day, the god of Heaven,
 the bringer of good luck, the god of heavenly light, the god of happiness and peace, the judge
 who rewards good and punishes evil. A wise old man with a long beard dressed in white,
 Belobog appears only during the day.

 CHERNOBOG     The Black God, the god of night, the god of Hell, the bringer of evil luck, the
 god of infernal darkness, the opposite of Belobog in every way. Chernobog and Belogbog are
 personifications of opposing principles of good and evil, light and dark, chaos and order.

 DAZHBOG    A personification of the sun. Each morning Dazhbog mounts a diamond chariot and
 drives forth from his golden palace in the east, starting the day as a young man and ending the
 day as a dying old man. His attendants are two virgins, the morning and evening stars; a wise old
 counsellor, the moon; seven judges, the planets; and seven messengers, the comets. Dazhbog
 ages with the year and takes on a different aspect with each season. Among other seasonal
 aspects, he was worshipped during the harvest as Sventovit, whose name means "Holy Light,"
 and in winter as Svarozhich, the newborn winter sun.(DA-BOG,DAJDBOG) "God who Gives"
 Slovanic Sun God, also god of Fire, and hearth and home. Son of Sky God SVAROG, His
 statues, of wood with silver hair and golden moustache, stood in the castle of Kiev. In Serbia,
 demoted to a demon.
 
 

 DOGODA  God of the West Wind, gentle and carrressing.

 DOMOVOI     The protector of the house. Every home had its own domovoe who dwelled behind
 the oven and who might abandon the house if he was not properly honored. The Domovois
 protected not only the human inhabitants of the house but their herds and household animals as
 well. In some areas the Slavs believed that prosperity and well-being could not exist in a new
 house until the head of the family died and became its guadian spirit.Generally ape like, but could
 take many forms, including human.

 KARLIKI    (Slavonic)- Russian dwarfs of the underworld. They and the Lychie (see Leshy) wood
 spirits  were said to have fallen from Heavan with satan. A christian belittling of old gods.

 KEREMET   (Slavonic)-Wotyak people. A mischievous god who was placated by rituals mating
 him to  Mukylcin, the Earth Mother

 KHORS    A Slovanic Hunting god, portrayed by a stallion.
 

KREMARA     Slavonic-Polish. Proyecyor of pigs.  Beer was offered to him in the hearth.Piglets were weaned from the  sows by Priparchis.

 KUPULA     A goddess of water, sorcery and herbal lore. Kuplula personifies the magical and spiritaul power inherent in  water, and Kupula's devotees worshipped her with ritual baths and offerings of flowers cast upon water. Since fire as well  as water has powers of purification, her worshippers also danced aroudn and leaped over huge bonfires. Frequently her  effigy was burned or cast into pools of water. Kupula's cult preserved an extensive lore of magical plants and herbs which  gave men the power to read minds, control evil spirits, find hidden treasures, and win the love of beautiful women

 KUPALO    A god of joy, but also a sacrificed god Particularly associated with bathing in rivers  and in night-gathered dew  at his Midsummer festivals, at the end of which an image of him was passed through fire and thrown into a River. see also  YARILO.

 KURWAICHIN - Polish. Protector of lambs.

 LESHY - Slavonic forest god. He and his wife Leshachikha were the parents of Leshonki or Leshies. He had a bluish face,  green eyes, which often popped out, and a long green beard. The Leshies, who threw no shadow, died in October and  revived in Spring (when they were most dangerous). They were jealous of their territory, leading travellers astray but usually
 releasing them in the end. The spell against them was to take your clothes off under a tree and put them on backwards  again.

 MATI SYRA ZEMLIA     Not a name, but a title which means Moist Mother Earth. An earth goddess. The most ancient and  possibly the most important of the Slavic gods. Ever fruitful and powerful, Mati Syra Zemlia was worshipped well into the  twentieth century. Mother Earth was an oracle whom anyone could consult without any need for a priest or shaman as a  go-between. The Slavs felt the profoundest respect for Mother Earth. Peasants settled property disputes by appealing to  Mother Earth to witness the truth of their claims, and oaths were sworn in her name.

 MOKOSH    Also MOKYSHA, MOKUSH The goddess who both gives and takes life, the spinner of the thread of life, the  giver of the water of life. Mokosh later became PARASKEVA-PIATNITSA, a goddess of spinning, water, fertility, health  with marriage.

 MYESTAS, MYESYATS     Slavonic Moon God.  - but sometimes appears as the suns beautiful young bride whom he  marries each Spring and abandons each Winter. As a Moon god, his wife in some versions is Dennitsa (Svezda Dennitsa),  the Morning Star (Venus).

 OVINNIK - God of barns

 PERUN     Also PIORUN, PYERUN, PERON ,PEROUN,  Sun,.lightning and war god. Lord of the thunderbolt, "Lord of  the Whole World." God of thunder, justice, and war, chief adversary of the Black God. Perun's weapons are thunderbolts.  The Slavs made sacrifices of goats and bulls to Perun in a grove with an oak tree. With the coming of Chritianity, Perun  merged with St. Elijah, who is portrayed in icons flying across the sky in a chariot. He gave his name to Thursday,  Perendan. Also a Harvest God.  May be a form of THOR brought by the Scandanavian  traders to Novgorod and Kiev.

 POLEVIK   A field Spirit.; every field had its own. Could be mischieious or helpful. Placated with offereings, in a ditch, of  two eggs and a cockerel who could no longer crow, In northern Russia, sometimes replaced with a beautiful  girl spirit.
 

PORENTIUS , POREVIT    Five -headed god of the island of Rugen. He had one head on each of the cardinal points and  one on his chest.

 RUGIEVIT    A seven faced god of the island of Rugen in the Baltic. Similar to PORENTIUS, SVANTOVIT, and  TRIGLAV

 STRIBOG    God of cold and frost. His statue stood in Kiev with those of DA-BOG, KHORS and PERUN.

 SVANTOVIT (SWIETOWIT)    Slavonic. A warrior god of plenty with prophetic powers. Envisioned with four heads, a  bow in his left hand and a drinking horn in his right. His cult senter was Rugen in the Baltic.

 SVAROG   Sky god Ruler of the Universe. Progenitor of the Slavonic dieties. His son DA-BOG represented the Sun.

 SVAROZHICH  (SVAROGICH)    (Son of Svarog) Fire God. Brother of DA-BOG though sometimes regarded as the  same.

 SYEN     (Southern Slavonic)Guardian spirits of the home who can enter the bodies of men, dogs, snakes and hens.
 
 TRIGLAV    A god of Stettin(Szczecin or Szczein) where he had four temples. He had three heads, representing Heaven ,  Earth and Underworld. The faces were veiled so he would not see the sins of the world.  He had a black horse which gave  omens.
 TROJANU (Slavonic)     The Roman Emperor Trajan, defied in some parts of Russia under this name. Attributes similar to  Perun.

 VED'MA    A demon goddess who flies over the clouds and mountains on a broom or rake. Ved'ma causes storms, keeps  the water of life and death, and knows the magical properties of plants. Ved'ma can be young and beautiful or old and ugly  as she pleases.

VELES ( Also VOLOS)   Veles was worshipped in two aspects. As Veles he is god of death and the underworld, god of music, and a sorcerer. As Volos he is god of cattle wealth and commerce. The worship of Veles vanished with the coming of Christianity, but the worship of Volos survived as late as the eighteenth century.

 VLKODLAKS (VOOKODLAKS) Slavonic name for werewolf. Believed to cause eclipses of the sun and moon.

 VODYANOI    Dangerous water spirits, inhabiting lakes, pools and rivers, particularly near mill-dams. Could assume many shapes, including those of a fish, a giant man or a naked woman combing water from her hair.  They drew humans into drowning, their victims becoming slaves in their underwater places.

 WALGINO    Polish - Protector of the cattle.

 WENCESLAS:   In Slavonic Myth, King Wenceslas of Bohemia sleeps under a mountain with his knights, awaiting the call  of their country's needs.

 YARILO    God of passion and sexual love and fertility. Young girls held a flower festival for him in the Spring, and at the  end of Summer his funeral rites were marked by dancing and feasting.

 ZORIA Also ZARIA The heavenly bride, goddess of beauty and morning. At down her worshippers greeted her as "the brightest maiden, pure, sublime, honorable." 1
