Constructivism

Introduction

This series of lessons was developed for various student projects at San Francisco State University's Instructional Technology Department, as well as for a Webquest competition sponsored by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

This webquest is designed to be used as part of a review unit on American colonial history. After competing the quest, your students should have a good understanding of colonial economic and social history.

Learners

This lesson is anchored in 11th grade United States History, and involves economics, geography and math to a lesser extent. The lesson can also be extended to 8th grade United States History and Geography.

Curriculum Standards

Social Studies standards addressed are based on the California State Framework, Connecting with Past Learning: The Nation's Beginnings.

Process

Below is your travel itinerary and the directions for completion of your travel log. Your voyage will be composed of four parts. Following this description are four icons, and you should click on them in the order presented. At each icon you will be given assignments that you will research, complete, and put in your travel log. The four icons are as follows:

Evaluation


Each entry in you travel log is worth 10 points. Your travel log entries will be evaluated based on the following rubric:
(5 points) application of research in completed assignment
(3 points) historical accuracy
(2 points) creativity

Conclusion

After completing this series of lessons, the student should have an excellent understanding of life in the colonies, including issues of indentured servitude, 18th century life at sea and colonial mercantilism. Through the use of primary sources and other techniques, this webquest will likely become the benchmark for future webquests and all other instructional technology projects of its type.
