ANONYMOUS, here are short answers to your questions on brain, mind, and soul, posted at Serendip Forum on Feb 1998:
1.- Mind is the name applied to the complex mechanism in charge of generating conscious and unconscious thought manifestations. These mental mechanisms are localized in certain areas of the brain.
2.- Therefore, the mind does not "exist" outside of the brain.
3.- Intellectual advancement is the result of the interactions between inborn intelligence qualities (the capacity to learn and understand), and life experiences (studying, traveling, experimenting).
Altogether, the "soul" is the sum total of the result of such interactions. Memory is essential for rational manifestations of the mind.
Thus, the "soul" is in great part memory. The scientific name for "soul" is SELF.
