About "Hypnosis", posted by you in Sabranet on July 19, 1998:
I think that it's a very interesting experiment, and that hypnosis may benefit someone who needs hidden information about himself (in the unconscious). So, is it expected that the experimental subject derives benefit from the hypnotic experience? If so, will this kind of "need" be recognized by the subject? Or is he unable to realize that hypnosis might help in uncovering hidden information...?
I apologize if I'm asking unimportant questions, but it is a very unknown theme to me... Thank you.
Maria, the hypnotic state ('trance') may be induced for the specific purpose of unearthing unconscious material. Please refer to the use of hypnosis for the discovery of the motive behind convulsive seizures:
UNCONSCIOUS DIVORCE
Hypnosis can be used for experimental purposes; It is widely used for entertainment, with the subject's acquiescence. I used it that way a long time ago, but not to make cheap fun of the subjects. I developed simple ways to have the subject in TOTAL control. That is, she/he know that they are in trance, although they don't appear to be so. I ask their consent to a given experiment. Better an example:
"When I count to 3, you will find yourself in an airplane that will have to make an emergency landing. You will tell me what is going on, knowing that it is not true. At any moment you can say "Stop!" to suspend the experience. Ready?"
The subject agrees, and I say, "One, two, three, start!"
The face appears as if the person has his attention concentrated somewhere else, far awat. The following is a transcript of one such session.
"I am in an airplane, no, I don't see you, but I know that you are next to me in the salon, and I hear you clearly. I know that this is am hypnotic session, and that I can stop it. I look at the scenery through my window, the captain comes out, and is saying, 'We must crash-land, do not worry...
The plane is losing altitude, I see the ground approaching, we are going to crash, it is horrible!..."
I ask, "Can you wait a few seconds more?"
"Yes... we are now almost down!... No, no, I can't stand it, stop!"
The eyes have recovered focus on the present, the subject is visibly shaken. I tell him, you know it is just an experiment; he says, yes, but it is terrible; I ask, do you want to feel all right; he assents.
I say, "When I count to three, you will have the full realization of the facts, and you will feel completely at ease."
This indeed happens. I say,
"You are still under hypnosis. I'll count to three, and you will be entirely free of its effects. Then I'll give you an order, and you will not be forced to follow it without your consent." And so it happens.
A person can be hypnotized even not realizing it, but usually there must be some sort of rapport. Worse still --not yet accepted by the 'authorities'-- is that a person can be hypnotized against his will.
When I was one day entertaining a group, a fellow came in and said, do you really believe in such nonsense? Following a 'hunch,' I decided to try and hypnotize him. It succeeded, to my great disbelief! I had the fellow pull off his shoes, grab a vase with flowers, climb on a table, and assume Eros' posture. Now I told him to wake up. No need to describe more...
I even used hypnosis recently, to send a woman to her favorite beach, while being bored in a waiting room. She knew me, and she told me she was a good 'subject.' She agreed with my proposal, and her eyes focused somewhere on a beach, and described yo me her pleasant surroundings, until the waiting ceased.
I have a lot of material on short-term use for specific medical purposes, even discovering what a motherhad done to her disappeared newborn, absolutely biblical. Perhaps she was not condemned by the law as a simple infanticide... Also, short psychoanalytic sessions for very specific purposes. A year ago, I agreed to see a woman, whom I had to treat with explanations based on my ideas about Eve in Paradise, because she was suffering from 'Eve's crisis'!
