DYNAMIC-SCIENTIFIC PHILOSOPHY

ANALOGIES 29 and 30

Chose one of the three Samples as the most analogous to the Model, and write it down, with your reasoning.

29.- Matter-Atom

Total-Part
Polymer-Monomer
X-rays-Radium

30.- Red tomato-Green watermelon

Red ball-Yellow ball
Red brick-Green grass
Yellow orange-Green cucumber

CHOICE AND EXPLANATION

29.- Total-Part :-) Matter is made of many types of Atoms combined to configure all sorts of molecules. Polymers --whether artificial (plastics) or natural (fibrin, starch)-- are huge repetitions of Monomers, the basic components. Monomers are certainly part of the Polymer (the Total), yet the chosen sample is as all-encompassing as the model is, while Monomers are specific components. X-rays are a specific type of electromagnetic radiations (photons) that traverse many kinds of matter. Radium is a radioactive element that emmits alpha particles (helium nuclei). Both X-rays and Radium cause ionization of Atoms (loss of electrons), being therefore called "ionizing radiations." Since the result is cell's DNA damage, both are carcinogens, yet are used under strict control to kill cancer cells.
The analogy in this game is by attribute: Of variable composition?

30.- Yellow orange-Green cucumber :-) Since function is more important than shape, and shape more important than color in the scale of attributes, the criterion here is 'being food.' Red ball-Yellow ball come second, on account of being of roundish shape.
