"Birth"

by Leah Porter

A flash of white
light stinging
the charcoal orbs
constrict
as the form
slips free and
cold metal slices
through warm, saturated
steaming tissue
drops limply,
pink and raw
into the shining
plastic tray.
Connection terminated.

A feeble cry
escapes, piercing
virgin drums
boom within
and the echoes
fly free
through hollowed chambers
resonating, vibrating
silence
thunders menacingly
as the artificial
halogens flicker
then the moment breaks
gushing relief
flows fast and thick and
the shiver subsides
when flesh meets flesh.
Life begins.
