INTRODUCTION
Thank you for expressing interest in Junior Bible Quiz (JBQ). JBQ is a tremendous program because it helps to motivate children to learn God's Word. I trust that your persual of the enclosed material will increase your interest and that soon you will begin JBQ at your church. I believe JBQ is a powerful tool in the advancement of the cause of Christ.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
1. JBQ is designed for children in grades K-6.
2. A team consists of 2 to 8 quizzers and a coach (an assistant coach is also permissable).
3. Four quizzers may quiz at once for each team and substitutions are allowed.
4. A church may have an unlimited number of teams. Teams sponsored by Christian schools or JBQ clubs will need prior approval from the state coordinator before quizzing.
5. A quizzer "quizzes out" either by answering six questions correctly in one 20 question match (in which case ten bonus points are awarded) or by answering 3 questions incorrectly in one such match. When a quizzer "quizzes out" that quizzer must sit out for the remainder of that particular match. This keeps one individual from totally dominating any single match.
6. The questions are divided according to point values (10, 20, & 30) and each point value includes questions covering basic Bible content, Scripture memorization, and theology.
7. The term "Break In" represents a very important concept. Each question in the fact pack has some words in bold face type. These words are all that are needed to distinguish that particular question from any other question of the same point value. At that point in the question it is safe to "break in". It is thus helpful to have the quizzers learn the bold face words as the question and the rest of the question as part of the answer.
GETTING STARTED
1. If you are interested in beginning this program you should purchase several copies of the official guidelines. These are available from the Kentucky District Office (502-241-7111) or from Gospel Publishing House.
2. If you decide to begin a JBQ program, you should order "Bible Fact Packs" from Gospel Publishing House (they are in the catalog) or Kentucky District Office (502-241-7111). GPH phone # (417-862-2781) or (1-800-641-4310) catalog order only.
3. You will also need an electronic quiz set and if you desire further information concerning purchasing one, call "Electramatic" at (612) 781-9588 or "Steve Kirkman" at (313) 398-1161. The cost is approximately $300 to $350.
4. It is helpful to have another church bring its JBQ team to your church in order to do an exhibition for your congregation. Contact your divisional coordinator if you are interested in having such an exhibition.
SPECIFICS OF KENTUCKY JBQ
1. We have West, Central, and East Divisions. The West Division includes all churches that are west of Beaver Dam; the Central Division includes the Bowling Green, Elizabethtown, and Radcliffe areas; and the East Division includes Louisville, Frankfort, Georgetown and all churches north, east and south of Lexington. If you have any questions concerning which division would include your church, then please contact the District Coordinator.
2. We are offering two levels of competition -- "A" and "B". "A"** League functions basically as outlined in the rule book--each 20 question match includes ten 10 point questions, seven 20 point questions, and three 30 point questions. "B"** League competition is limited to the ten point questions and is for K-3 graders only (with exceptions made for those with learning disabilities--all exceptions must be cleared with the coordinator of the appropriate division).
** "A" League can include K - 3rd graders also.
*** "B" League is thru K - 3rd grade only.
3. In both leagues, we use a format which makes joining us fairly easy. We have a "focus set" of questions (until late in the season) from which 75% of the questions for a particular match are taken. The remaining 25 are taken from the questions previously covered (75% new, 25% review).
4. Each quiz tournament is on a Saturday, (see Divisional Coordinator for times).
PLAYOFF INFORMATION
1. The State Finals will be open to all teams who register by paying the appropriate tourney fee. It will be a "2-day" tourney, with "Challenge Rounds" on Friday night and "Level" Competition on Saturday, thus trophies will be awarded to teams within each ability level. Every team that competes at STATE will receive an award.
2. Both Regional and National competition would be decided at State Finals from those who have competed in highest ability level. This means that 1st would be for Nationals, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th for Regional only. Should any of these teams not wish to procede, then the opportunity will be passed on to the next eligible qualifier. Teams will be asked in advance of the State Finals whether they will attend these post season events should they qualify.
REQUIREMENTS
1. Each church is required to furnish two adult (or trained teens-7th grade minimum) volunteers per team to serve as officials at each tournament. Also each church is required to furnish 1 Quizmaster per each 2 teams competing. Furnishing the required number of officials will result in that team starting each round with a 20 point bonus. In order to earn these bonus points at State Finals, all officials must be certified. 2. We need for each church to maintain a ratio of one quiz competition level electronic quiz set for every two teams which it enters. If you are unable, however, to get a quiz set in time for a particular tournament, please check with your divisional coordinator to see if there are enough quiz sets in your division to allow you to compete until you are able to procure enough electronic quiz sets.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
1. The registration fee for the '05 - '06 season will be $45.00 per team. Contact your Division Coordinator for registration deadline. There will be a $10.00 per team late fee for registering teams after the designated deadline.
3. There is an additional $40.00 cost per team involved in the State Finals Tournament. This is to be payable by March 6, 2006 and given to your Divisional Coordinator at your last meet.
4. Children may join your program at any time during the season. You may add new teams during the season providing there is room in the Division and they are registered one week prior to the first tournament in which they compete. You may change your rosters (by communicating with your divisional coordinator) one week prior to each tournament during the season and prior to the State Finals Tournament.
CERTIFICATION AND WORKSHOPS
1. There will be a JBQ coaches' and officials' track at the "All Church Ministries Conference" September 17, 2005 at Elizabethtown, Ky. SATURDAY ONLY.
2. An officials training date will beset for Officials' certification later in the season at a location in your division. This will be scheduled by your Divisional Coordinator.
PHILOSOPHY
Competition helps to motivate the quizzers to study God's Word but adult leaders should be sure to emphasize the learning aspect by reminding the children that anyone who learns God's Word is a winner!
