Spells of Protection

One of the more common uses of magick is for personal protection. Personally, I believe that true cases of "psychic attack" are very rare. But the fact remains that in our daily lives, we are constantly bombarded by negative psychic and emotional energies, usually unintentionally. In any case, using magick to create defenses for ourselves is fairly easy, and I do recall my grandmother saying something about an ounce of prevention. Two very popular methods of general protection are the Witches' Bottle and shielding. These seek to divert negativity away from their user. For more specific-purpose protective spells, read the page on spell construction to design a protective spell tailored to your needs.

A word on ethics, when creating a protective spell, especially in the case of shielding, the question of whether returning the negativity to the sender is ethical always arises. I have heard many arguments on both sides, and I have to say no. First, the person sending the negativity to you is most likely doing it unintentionally. Secondly, if they are sending it intentionally ("hexing") then the Law of Three is going to screw them far better than you could. Plus, it is a logical assumption that if someone is going to attack via negativity, then they probably know how to shield anyway, so it is possible that your reflection will be reflected, and "hitting" an innocent person with a negativity blast. Finally, returning fire typically only fuels these magickal "Witch Wars," and the only casualty usually is the community. So, if someone is sending negativity your way, be the big witch and just ground it. Let karma take care of itself.
