Patriotism and racism This is the second part or 'babies still cry'. In the early stage of human development, a group of people (a family, a tribe, a village or a country) would invade other groups of people to survive, to secure scarce resources for survival or to enrich their resources for their own better living. The conquered might lose what they had, or even became slaves. To prevent themselves being conquered, they must defend their group as a whole. I believe this was how patriotism originated. Now conquest by armed invasion is no longer accepted by mankind at large. Therefore I am here to question the validity of advocating patriotism. 1. The advocating of patriotism leads to xenophobia. We all know the world is a small globe we have to share to survive, why should we set up borders and protect them vigorously even we know there is no body going to enslave us? I understand that humans are not capable of maintaining order without law and confinements (borders) yet, at least we can admit the purpose of modern country is to make the village earth manageable by not fully evolved humankind. The existence of the organisation has a practical meaning. If we ignore the practical side and put too much feelings into it, it would be false proud. History has shown that a population filled with false proud could be manipulated by persons of wicked ambition. Remember how Hitler led the Germans to mass destruction. 2. It is a form of racism. There is a dominant race in most countries. The culture, the ideology, and the interests of the dominant race, are so often the interests of the country. It lures people to think that a particular culture (often their own) is superior to others, hence their country and race are superior too. In fact, every culture (total way of life) has its own importance in the flow of human history, in the past, present, or the future. 3. The next stage of human evolvement is unity. Heritage, no matter originates from which part of the world, is part of HUMAN HERITAGE for all human beings to share. Patriotism limits people's sight on a particular point of the world, focusing on one's surroundings, rather than urging people to look far and beyond, knowing the world as a whole. 4. Marxism is claimed to be the ideology of communist countries. But the dictators of these countries never told their people the fact that Marx clearly saw the fault of patriotism. One of Marx's famous idea is "workers have no country", a direct denouncing of patriotism. Why? Because the dictators know patriotism is the most convenient tool of suppression: any thing against their rule is "unpatriotic", any one against them is a "traitor"; and the best of it is, every body is brought up to hate "traitors" because they believe patriotism a virtue.
