I took the night train from Lisbon to Madrid. That's definitely the way to go if you are bagpacking. In that way, you can sleep on the train, and start exploring the city upon arrival during the morning. Conversely, if you travel during the day, you waste time on the train, and when you reach your destination, you might not have that much time to do things before main attractions close.
Most people who go to Madrid hit the big three: 1) Museo del Prado 2) Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía 3) Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. There are many other museums from which to choose. Since I'm a museum buff, I added three to my itinerary:
1) Museo de America 2)Museo Arqueológico Nacional 3) Museo Lázaro Galdiano.
