I. 3. B. Anti-Slavery Sentiments-- Rebellions

1712
- In New York City, slaves set fire to a house and killed or injured anyone coming to extinguish the flames. There were 8 to 10 white men killed and twice as many black men killed.

1740
- In Stono, South Carolina, slaves killed two white men and stole guns and ammunition. "Cato," the leader of the revolt, led the slaves southwest, burning or plundering each house they came to for 12 miles. More than 20 white men were killed.

1741
- In New York four whites were killed by slaves. In retaliation 13 blacks were burned at the stake, 18 were hung and 71 were transported.

1831
- Nat Turner, a Virginia slave, led the greatest slave rebellion, resulting in 160 deaths. There were 60 white men killed and 100 black men killed. The rebellion was stopped by the Federal Militia.
