Poll Tax

The poll tax was a fee used to keep primarily black people from voting. In 1964, the 24th Amendment to the Constitution outlawed this tax as a requirement to vote in federal elections, and in 1966, the Supreme Court outlawed it as a requirement for voting in state elections as well.
