The Harlem Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance took place in Harlem, New York, during the 1920's. During this period of time, African American authors, poets and artists flourished and captivated audiences of different racial heritage. The ideas behind the Harlem Renaissance were the development of racial pride and self-confidence in literature and art, and the attempt of African Americans to rediscover themselves. Langston Hughes, a poet from the Harlem Renaissance, described the period best when he said, "We your Negro artists who create now intent to expand our individual dark skinned selves without fear or shame."
