1539
- 24 January 1539
- Anneken Jans, a well-to-do Anabaptist widow, was put to death by drowning as a heretic. Anneken brought her 15-month-old son, Isaiah, with her to the execution site and asked if anyone in the crowd would be willing to care for him. Isaiah was taken by a baker who already had six children. He grew up to become a successful brewer and, later, mayor of Rotterdam. But he never became an Anabaptist like his mother.
