France
1216
- April 1216
- Raymond VI and his son Raymond VII arrived in this independent city-state and were greeted enthusiastically by its citizens. The 2 Raymonds began making plans for driving Simon de Montfort out of the region. Before long they had assembled a large army in Avignon.
1318
-
- Four members of a Fraticelli group were burned at the stake by the Inquisition. The Fraticelli responded to persecution by claiming that they were the true Christians and the Pope and his bishops were the actual heretics. The term "Fraticelli" originally referred to all groups that renounced the ownership of property, but by this time it referred most often to the Spiritual Franciscans.
