Jan van Batenburg accepted the mantle of Gideon at a meeting of radical Anabaptist leaders. The group hoped that Batenburg would become a capable replacement for Jan van Leiden, whose campaign to bring in the Kingdom at Munster was failing.

Menno Simons was ordained by Obbe Philips as an elder in the Anabaptist community. It's not clear when or where Menno was baptized, although it is probable he was baptized by Obbe Philips.
