Friedrichstadt

Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

1620?

This little city was founded around this time by the young and enlightened Duke Frederick III as a refuge for the Dutch Remonstrants who had been excluded from the Reformed Church in the Netherlands. The Duke assured complete religious freedom to all residents, and before long the city attracted refugees of many kinds, including Mennonites, Lutherans, Quakers, Jews and Socinians.
