A priest named Pierre de Castelnau, sent by the Pope to expel the heretics of Languedoc, was speared to death by a masked knight on horseback near here.


1216

May 1216
The strategically located town of Beaucaire elected to put itself under the lordship of Raymond VI and Raymond VII, thus defying the soldiers of Simon de Montfort who were stationed within the town's borders. Young Raymond brought his army from Avignon, crossed the Rhone river, and occupied Beaucaire, forcing Simon's men to take refuge in the citadel.
