Our herb garden here in Nassau is very much a virtual garden. Everything is in containers. I'm breaking all the rules about not re-using potting compost (this could develop into a serious problem with mosaic virus having killed off my last batch of tomato seedlings). My containers are mostly old plastic water and juice bottles, cut in half, with holes in the bottom.
Why? Everything has to be imported here. Plant pots are therefore relatively expensive. Plastic containers are not recycled here, so I feel like I'm doing my bit for the environment by finding an alternative use for them.
Topsoil and potting compost have to be imported here too. In most places, if you dig down about 6" you'll hit rock, so raised beds need to be used. Water retention (or the lack of it) is therefore also a problem. A sandy, raised bed is an ideal enviromnent for breeding ants! Compost heaps can become a nice dry place for the local wildlife to reside too!
As you might have guessed, I'm having to be a little pragmatic about organic gardening at the moment. I still refuse to use poisons to kill bugs which attack my plants though.
