Many of the passage that mention "spirit" do not refer to the Holy Spirit. 1. Requires context study. 2. Prominence in God's book: a. "Spirit" appears 261 times in 234 verses(KJ). b. "Holy Ghost" 90 times in 89 verses(KJ); does not appear in the OT.(KJ). c. "Holy Spirit" 3 times in OT; 4 in NT(KJ). d. "Godhead" 3 times in NT(KJ). II. Body. A. The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. 1. Creation: Genesis 1:2. 2. The Psalmist request: Psalm 51:11. 3. Instructed: Nehemiah 9:20. 4. Inspired prophets: Ezekiel 11:24. 5. Craftsmen on tabernacle: Exodus 31:3. 6. Note: Isaiah 63:10-11. 7. Hence: II Peter 1:19-21. B. The Holy Spirit during Christ's time on Earth. 1. The birth of Jesus: Matthew 1:18. 2. John prophesied: Matthew 3:11. 3. Identified Christ: Luke 3:22. 4. Blasphemy against Holy Spirit: Matthew 12:31-32. 5. The Godhead involved in one's obedience: Matthew 28:19. 6. Simeon: Luke 2:25-26. 7. Most appropriate for all of the Godhead to be involved while the Lord was upon the earth. C. The Holy Spirit in the days of the apostles. 1. Promise: John 14:26. 2. The day of Pentecost: Acts 2:4. a. Instilled power in apostles. b. Prophesied: Acts 2:17-18. c. The command: Acts 2:38. 3. Filled the apostles: Acts 4:8. 4. Instilled power to detect liars: Acts 5:3. 5. Proof of the Gentile acceptance: Acts 10:47. 6. The disciples found comfort: Acts 9:31. a. Had been promised: John 14:16-17. b. Guided: John 14:13. 7. Laid hands on others to receive Holy Spirit: Acts 8:17. 8. The Holy Spirit directed the apostles and other disciples: Acts 10:19. D. The Holy Spirit in our day. 1. In baptism: Acts 2:38. a. Done in name of all three: Matthew 28:19. b. Pleads: Revelation 22:7. 2. Seals the faithful: Ephesians 1:13. 3. Can be grieved: Ephesians 4:30. 4. Dwells in saints: Romans 8:9, 14, 16; Ephesians 5:18. 5. Note: Galatians 5:22-23. III. Conclusion. A. Can be resisted: Acts 7:51. B. Refusing the word is refusing the Holy Spirit.
