Trip Through The Bible

Lesson Three: God and Creation

The Existence of God

The Bible does not argue the existence of God. It simply accepts and speaks of His existence as a fact. There is ample evidence in the Bible iself for the existence of Jehovah. No other book has been as well documented as the Bible. Men have used every approach to attack the idea of a divine being as taught in the word of God. Yet, the Bible still survives as the one book where one can examine the evidence for the existence of the creator and sustainer of all life.

The Bible is a book free of contradictions. All claims by men that contradicitons exist have been adequately answered. The Bible, both Old and New Testaments, endured the tests and stands today as testimony of the existence of God. How could any book, authored by 40 writers and written over several centuries, have withstood the attacks made upon the Bible if it was not a work of God? The very existence of the Bible proves the existence of God.

While there are many external(outside of the Bible) evidences that could be presented, it is not the purpose of this course to deal with all of those.

“For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God"(Hebrews 3:4).

The Nature of God

The Jehovah of the Bible is a divine being, without beginning and without end. God exists. His infinite power reaches from heaven to every creation he has brought forth. All power is given to him, from the creation of the physical earth and of mankind, to the last cell of life that exists when he destroys the earth.

Jehovah is not only the God of power and might, he is loving, kind, generous, patient, and cares for all of creation.

God is a spirit(John 4:24); God is almighty(Genesis 17:1); God is omni-present(Psalms 139:7); God is holy(I Peter 1:16); God is unchangeable(James 1:17); God is filled with wisdom and knowledge (Romans 11:33)...and a host of other attributes that make him God!

 The Godhead

The Godhead has always existed. God said, in the time of creation, “Let US make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness”(Genesis 1:26). The Godhead consists of three divine beings: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit(Matthew 28:19). The Father called Jesus his son(Matthew 17:5). The Son prayed for the Father to give the apostles another Comforter, the Holy Spirit(John 14:16). When Jesus was baptized, the Father spoke from heaven, the Spirit was descending from heaven, and Jesus was in the water(Matthew 3:16-17). Each of these three divine beings compose the Godhead and are eternal in nature.

 The Creations of God

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth”(Genesis 1:1). The word “created” means to bring something from nothing. Such is beyond the power of a mortal being. All that mankind can do, from the beginning till the present, is to take what exists and make a product by altering its composition. From nothing, nothing comes--for humans. Not so with God: he speaks matter into existence. Only the Godhead possesses such power.

Jehovah created humans to populate the earth. To accomplish this, he brought into existence from his created elements a man and a woman(Genesis 5:2). God instructed the man and the woman to populate the earth with their offsprings. It took life to produce life, as it does today.

Isaiah expressed it well: “But now, O Lord, thou art our Father; we are the clay and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand”(Isaiah 64:8). The Lord created all of us, whatever our physical attributes, whoever might be our parents, and wherever we may live. As humans, we are all responsible to God for our very existence.

The Lord also created the Law of Moses for the Hebrews, the Law of Christ for all nations, the church of Christ for the saved, a prepared place in heaven for those who die faithful to Him, and Hell for those who reject His will. Jehovah is the Almighty Creator; mankind is to glorify and praise him.
