DIRECT DISCRIMINATION:
a work rule that discriminates by reference to a particular attribute or characteristic possessed by particular persons

ADVERSE EFFECT DISCRIMINATION:
a rule that is neutral on its face, but has an adverse effect on persons by virtue of some attribute they possess

EXAMPLE: a rule that requires persons to wear a helmet on the work site. This has an adverse effect on persons whose religious belief requires that they wear turbans
