New Brunswick Highways

Don Cayo, president of the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies, has entered the debate over highway tolls. He supports a more balanced budget for highways which means tolls or higher gas taxes. He points out that in New Brunswick expenditures are $395 million for a vigorous road building and operating budget, with only $246 million recovered through various fees. In Nova Scotia, the deficit is smaller but road maintenance is being deferred and springtime potholes in August are common. Mr. Cayo points out that those who can't afford cars subsidize those who drive, through the use of general tax revenue to fund highways.

Doug Young, former Member of Parliament for Acadie-Bathurst, has been appointed president of the Maritime Road Development Corporation. According to a recent ad in the Globe & Mail, MRDC's "mission as builders of high-quality, environmentally sensitive and competitively priced tolled highways, is to build the safest and most advanced highway systems for New Brunswick, Atlantic Canadians and the world"!!
