"There is a river" is a more powerful Biblical analogy or parable than we may think at first. Psalm 1 begins saying that he who meditates day and night on the law of the Lord is like a tree planted by a river. Jesus said that He was the water of life and that he who partakes of this water. Revelation 21-22 describes a beautiful ending, promising a new city and a glorious time. As with the symbology of these great structures alone but with there being a river in the heart of the city. "There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God." It is one of the last and the most beautiful promises of the Revelation.
But, what does that mean? There is an access to the Spirit that is the immediate source of life, light, love and healing. "There is a river the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most high. God is in the midst of her, she sall not be moved. God shall help her and that right early." Now more times of crisis scriptures: "The heathens raged, the kingdoms were moved, He uttered His voice, the earth melted. The Lord of Hosts is with us, the God of Jacob is our refuge. Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations He has made in the earth. He makes wars to cease unto the ende of the earth, He breaks the bow and cuts the spear asunder, He burns the chariot in the fire." And now here is the prescription: "Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted upon the heathen, I wll be exalted in the earth. The Lord of Hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is or refuge."
In the midst of earth changes, wars, turmoils and all manner of frightening things here is an invitation to be still. Achilles was not able to do it and we all seem to have a diffuculty doing it. We are so anxiouss about external concerns that we are suspicious of meditation. Anyone talking about meditation becomes suspect of retreating from the real world and of being impractical. CONTINUE
