Summer 1998

The summer went by so quickly for the Babitts. David got out of school by the third week of June. He earned several awards for the school year including straight A's for the entire year, winning second place in a writing competition, and singing in the 4th grade choral concert. We rewarded David by taking him to his favorite restaurant and buying him a Nintendo game.

David has been working hard at home to earn some money. By doing daily chores, mowing the lawn every week, and helping out at other tasks, such as cleaning out the basement or garage, he managed to earn enough money to buy himself a 21-speed bicycle and bike helmet. He's proud of his hard-earned efforts and has something to show for it.

Once school has completed for the year, David started day camp through the County. He took some interesting camps such as nature camp, sports camp, sailing school, and science camp.

Penny Pincushion

With great sadness, our pet hedgehog, Penny Pincushion, passed away. Our 2-1/2 year old hedgie had not been feeling well and deteriorated rapidly to the point where she could not be resuscitated. She is missed deeply by all of us. She is now resting in "Hedgehog Heaven" and is buried in the back yard with the family's other late pets.  Go to Penny's Memorial Page

Besides the day camps, David enjoyed an entire week away from home by joining some of his fellow Webelos scouts at cub scouts camp in Goshen, Virginia. He enjoyed the hot weather in the mountains of Virginia and stayed active by fishing, canoeing, doing crafts, campfires, songs, rifle range, hiking, etc. Glenn joined him for a couple of days, too. It was an experience that David will like to have again, maybe next summer. Meanwhile, Juli suffered from "empty nest syndrome" since Glenn and David were away and Penny had passed on.

Glenn managed to stay completely busy by taking a summer course at the local University of Maryland.  He took a Novell Netware Administrator's course and passed the course with
a C.

Juli stayed busy by trying to keep everyone in line at the household! In addition, with her new computer, scanner, and printer, she is back in business full steam with the online Babitt Babbler and has started work on David's school's web site.

Vacation Time!

Glenn, Juli and David spent their summer vacation in Florida during late August. Here's where they visited:

  • Day 1:Left Baltimore and arrived in Orlando. We stayed in the Buena Vista Suites in Lake Buena Vista, Orlando -- a beautiful one bedroom suite and all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet.

  •

On our first day, we went to Universal Studios.  We've been here before in 1995, but wanted to see the new attraction, T2.  We saw T2 first, the Wild, Wild West stunt show, rode Back to the Future, Earthquake, saw the Horror Makeup Show, and Animal Actors on Stage.

  • Day 2:  Sea World -- we were here already back in 1995 so it was just a rehash.

  •

  • Day 3:  Kennedy Space Center -- Glenn was all psyched while Juli and David yawned.
  • Day 4:  Disney's Animal Kingdom (just opened in the spring) -- not too much to see here.  Just a couple of rides and no animals.
  • Day 5:  Wet fun at Disney's Blizzard Beach.

  •

  • Day 6:  Swimming, surfing and boogie boarding at Cocoa Beach.  Of course, you can't go to Cocoa Beach without stopping at the infamous Ron Jon Surf Shop!  It's an attraction all in itself!  We also watched a space shuttle take off that evening from Cape Canaveral.  The takeoff lit the entire night sky -- just like the picture above for Kennedy Space Center.
  • Day 7:  Can't go to Florida without getting MORE wet at Wet N Wild.
  • Day 8: Visited Ripley's Believe or Not just for something to do for a couple of hours before going back home.  Left Orlando and arrived back in Baltimore very late.
Time to recuperate from vacation and get ready for BACK TO SCHOOL!
