Impalement

This was one of the most revolting punishments ever devised by the human imagination and even in those days was hardly ever used.

It was done by inserting a sharply pointed stake into the victim's posterior, which was then forced through the body, emerging from the head, sometimes through the throat. The stake was then inverted and placed in the ground, so that the victims lived on in agony for days.
