Useful tools for difficult times

Here's a recent compilation I made of "useful tools for difficult times" - things that may help in the transition to a more favourable state of being. Of course this is my list and others will certainly have different prioritites. But I found its compilation a worthwhile exercise.
  1. Expect problems

The whole business of rising up from the primeval slime involves struggling against the limitations of the environment, which may be the material, personal or social environment. When things are quiet maybe this is a sign that it is a time for action.

  2. Disidentification (Assagioli)

Recognize that as well as the main personality ("I am a centre of pure self-consciousness and will") there are various subpersonalities which may take control from time to time. Learn to recognize when a subpersonality is in control. Learn the technique of disidentification. Avoid taking important decisions, or actions involving others, when a subpersonality is in control.

  3. Levels of consciousness (Wilber and others)

Aspire to a higher level of consciousness. Learn to recognize the characteristics of different levels. Avoid taking important decisions, or actions involving others, when operating from a lower level of consciousness.

  4. Spiritual practice

Establish a daily spiritual practice which can lead to a favourable state of mind. Learn to switch to this state of mind when circumstances require it.

  5. Ethics

Establish an ethical code (which may differ in some respects from the conventional morality accepted by the community). Try to behave according to this code. Come to terms with past behaviour which is now seen as unethical.

  6. Certainty

Provided the ethical conditions are met, have no doubt that the desired goal is attainable (Maybe the goal has to be formulated in a more abstract way for this condition to be met!).

  7. Patience

Avoid inappropriate action, or action at an inappropriate time, in haste to reach a solution. We have Eternity to solve these problems.

  8. Reconnection

Know what your spiritual sources are and reconnect to them when more energy is needed - maybe a particular literary, religious or musical work or something more abstract.

  9. Reality shifting

Recognize that the conventional reality which we all agree about is a subset of the total reality which is possible. The assertion of a different reality is not entirely to be excluded as one of the options.

  10. Appeal to spiritual guides

Know how to find your spiritual guides, among the living or the deceased - those whose spiritual qualities have made a special impact on your life, either personal acquaintances or public spiritual figures. Perform rituals to maintain contact with these guides e.g. by visiting sacred places. By appealing to them at a time of need, a solution may be found.

Note that 9 and 10 are there as measures for real emergencies and not as conjuring tricks. Also they should not be used in pursuit of egoistic or materialistic aims, but to achieve ethical or spiritual goals. The material world will sort itself out.
