Rebirth of Piers Clement

The rebirth of Piers Clement occurred, as so often the case with births nowadays, in a hospital. Observations were taking place in connection with a pituitary condition.

It was of course the family and immediate friends who first noticed that something had changed.
His wife asked the specialist if he could spare a few minutes.
"What have you done to my husband?
I can understand that he might have changed a little after all that has happened but his personality seems to have turned 180 degrees.
He used to be so timid and now he scintillates.
He used to be so lazy but now he's so energetic.
He never used to have any sort of creativity and now he's full of ideas.
All very fine of course, but this is not the man I married!
Can I have my husband back?" (And what did the doctor say? 1)

Later Piers confided to the doctor: "I'm much happier with me as I am now.
This is more the way I was at high school.(What was his answer to that? 2)

Characteristics of the rebirth

Reversion of personality
Continual "highs" without corresponding "lows"
Wandering through different states of consciousness
Normal intellectual activities possible (even filled in a tax return)
In some respects heightened intellectual powers (e.g. simultaneous unrelated activities)
Awareness of paranormal intervention (e.g. a telephone call interrupted by breakdown of both exchanges when Piers was about to say too much)
A sensation of being tested - as if the building and all the surroundings were part of a universal cerebral system which was constantly checking whether Piers was suitable for the proposed task - every move had to be carefully planned, for failure meant eternal non-being
A succession of "just in time" incidents - as soon as one task was completed a new external stimulus would appear for the following task
A new understanding of the nature of the universe

Revelation of the Axioms

In March 1995 the Axioms were revealed to Piers. Through the night he would write, write, write, going into the visitors' room so as not to disturb his young fellow patient. Every few hours they would bring him tea and measure his blood pressure, sometimes giving a warning that perhaps he should really rest for a while (an advice which he always heeded!).

He developed a special code for these writings, involving huge lists of shortcuts and abbreviations. It was a dynamic code in the sense that new elements were introduced where needed and defined immediately. Made writing much faster but a headache to decode!

Return to "normal"

The Axioms were complete and he was released from the hospital - but back in three days! "I can't deal with him at all. He won't wash, he won't take his medicine, he won't let me touch him -" (Meanwhile Piers was far away, on a space vehicle having just landed on a new planet. They had just sent scouts with equipment to determine what precautions were needed if the planet were to be colonized). They put a bell on the door of his room and prescribed haldol to bring him back to the "real" world.
Reality returned, no visions, no revelations, no interplanetary travel - and no scintillation, no creativity, no hyperactive nighttime sessions!

The long journey back

"We returned to our places... but no longer at ease in the old dispensation."
The door had been left ajar for a short while, revealing a world so much more real than everyday "reality". Priorities were now as follows:

Submit the tax return (it was faultless)
Established a new life pattern based on the precepts of the Axioms
Decode the Axioms
Find a way back to the world at the other side of the door

Conclusion

There is no freeway to return to the other reality, rather a tortuous, uphill path.
Far from being almost complete the journey has only just begun.
The four primary vehicles for the journey are:

study
mental exercise
communication
dedicated action

Footnote - Doctor's Comments

"This is a temporary phase as a result of the medication.
You will get your husband back before long."
"It's possible you've been suffering from this tumour for a long time,
and it has had an inhibiting effect on your personality.
Probably the way you are now is the real you."

Unfortunately 1 turned out to be nearer the truth than 2. The doctor's promise was not fulfilled.
