Night of the Slogans

They came in the evening
And stayed for the night
Clever, seducing
The wrong from the right
By hook or by crook
They sought their own way
They knew how to look
They knew what to say.

The sun had gone down
But sky remained bright
The atmosphere drowned
In cold neon light
No one could tell
What was real or designed
The blind slipped and fell
The sighted went blind.

The playwrites were stricken
Not one could compete
The truth was forsaken
And left in defeat
The poets were sleeping
With admen, like whores
And language was weeping
As catchphrases roared.

Have Great-Looking Hair
Make An Impression
Remember We Care
For Your Satisfaction
Control Your Life
You Just Gotta Chew
Protect Our Planet
It Could Be You.

Midnight arrived
And all was confusion
New slogans thrived
On each new illusion
Persuading, pretending
Enticing, implying
Preying on weakness
Sometimes just lying.

A new dawn appeared
Unnoticed by all
No one could see it
From inside the mall
The slogans had spoken
Like Satan's new son
And souls were on sale
Going cheap, two for one.
