First Born
My baby so tiny, so dear to behold
Awakened new love in my heart --
His tears and fresh laughter helped make me to see
My life had a special new part.
Long lashes that framed his soft baby eyes,
His very first smile that I shared,
The gurgling sounds as he sought yet to find
The way to form his first word.
Those very first steps when he'd stumble and fall,
Those arms reaching out towards my own,
The laughter of childhood heard all through the day
While he mimicked his mom on the phone.
He'd look through hs legs, his head upside down,
The sounds of his play echo still.
That armload of cookies he thought I'd not see
Brought feelings of love, oh, so real.
The first days of school when he ventured alone
Into a new world yet unknown.
Those mischievious looks just grew bigger in size
Causing his teachers to moan!
The struggles with discipline, learning, and more --
His world somehow grown in size.
Beginning to glimpse what the future might hold
Our hopes reaching up past the skies.
And now, he's a teen with all that entails --
He's grown in the blink of an eye!
The girls calling often, the want lists so long
And not enough money to buy
All the things he desires -- Oh, if only he'll learn
How futile that game can be.
If only he'll learn to stand proudly and say
"What you see standing here is just me."
A glimpse down the road to what lies ahead --
What will become of my son?
With a wife of his own and a child and a home,
He'll too discover the fun
Of watching a loved one so dear to your heart
Growing daily to greet the new world;
And I'll sit and look on with joy and tears
As all of his dreams are unfurled.
Where is my baby, my loved one, my son?
What is this change time has done?
It seems that he's growing to be a young man,
This surely can't be!...Yes, it can!
