Pollentia, Remains of the Roman Capital of the Balearic Islands

This is what remains of a Roman city called Pollentia.. meaning force... once the Balearic Roman Capital. It was Founded in 123B:C. by Cecilio Metelo, the Roman who finally conquered the Balearic Isalnds by lining his ships with leather to deflect the huge stones hurled by the 'foners' the talayotic inhabitants who dominated islands up until that time.

Pollentia was the geneological, but not the  geographical, predecessor of Pollensa, the town where I live.  The Ruins are located next to a town called Alcudia, whose outer wall is constructed mostly from the ruins of Pollentia, as are most of the dry stone walls in the surrounding countryside.

The people of Roman Pollentia constructed an aqueduct about 14 k long (more or less) bringing their water supply from Ternelles, a natural mountain spring just outside the town of Pollensa, where they migrated inland to, little by little, due the repeated sacking of Pollentia and the division of the Roman Empire, thus founding this town.

There are also the ruins of an outdoor theatre that belonged to
this capital of the Roman Balearic Colony.
It is believed to have seated about 2,000 people.

There is also a small museum with many interesting artifacts...
statues, pottery, jewelry, coins, there are even some
gladiator's shinguards...  those things are Huge!!!
