K-6 Transitional Bilingual Program

The aim of transitional bilingual education is to teach minority students the same academic concepts that other students are learning. The only difference is that this is done by instructing the student in their dominant home language, which in Eloy, Arizona is Spanish. In the classroom, both the teacher and the child use Spanish as a means of instruction communication, until the teacher evaluates and assesses the student to be proficient enough in the majority language. It is important to remember that some bilingual students are able to learn the four basic proficiency dimensions of the majority language which are listening, speaking, reading and writing within two years. While, on the other hand, cognitive thinking may take as long as five years (Baker, l993).

Once the child has been transitioned he or she is mainstreamed into a regular English classroom where they will no longer receive instruction in their home language. By then, the child should be proficient enough to receive all academic instruction in the majority language and should be able to perform well in all areas of the language.

Our schools' bilingual program is known as "late exit" (Ramirez & Merico, l990) because it allows about 40 percent of classroom instruction to be given in the child's dominate home language until 6th grade. The aim is to increase the use of the majority language in the classroom while proportionately decreasing the use of the home language

Pinal County Science Olympiad

The Pinal Elementary Science Olympiad sponsored tournaments are academic interscholastic competitions consisting of a series of individual and team events which students prepare for during the year. The competitions follow the format of popular board games, TV shows, and/or atheletic games. They included a balance between the various science disciplines of life science, earth science, and physical science. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of science facts, concepts, processes skills, and applications,

The Science Olympiad program is devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education for both students and teachers.

The l997 Science Olympiad for Pinal County was held March 1st , by the Ray School District in Kearny. This year Eloy Intermediate School was represented by three teams. Two of which received trophies: Team C tied with Ray for 4th place and team B received the 5th place honor.
