True Love

by Danny Merrifield (16)

On the first day I met her
I knew she was the one,
her hair so golden and her eyes so blue,
she was perfect and sweet and pure.

I took her by hand
and I led her down by the river
for the first time.
She asked me to kiss her and I did,
and she whispered to me, "I’ve found my man."

On the second day I told her I was hers for life,
and she sighed and told me she loved me.
I looked into her blue eyes
And I said,
"Give me your pain and your strife."

She told me she was mine,
her heart, her mind, her soul.
I smiled softly and I ran my hand
through that fair hair, so silky and fine.

On the third day I found happiness,
knowing for sure that she would be my love.
But the next day that would all change...
But I choose to digress....

As night neared my only true love,
she told me she’d found another.
I walked away slowly,
watching take flight a snow-white turtle dove.

On the fourth day I begged of her
to give me just one more chance.
She said yes, and the joy
was more than my lonely heart could endure.

Again I took her to the river so deep,
to see the roses that grew so red and free.
When she knelt to breathe in the fragrance,
I began to weep.

She hadn’t a chance to yell or even to cry,
as I plunged the knife into her back...
For you see, even the lovliest of creatures
must die.
