State of Grace

by Ashley Marshall (14)

darkness falls across the land
touching all who valiantly seek it
sweet escape is close at hand
away from hate and those who preach it

relief until the breaking of the day
when the nightmare of reality
is no longer held at bay
then it's back to the banality

of being daily kicked in the face
death if waiting out of reach
denying the coveted state of grace
there's nothing free, no thoughts, no speech

I sit alone and look up at that glorious kingdom
of the boundless sky, black as oil and just as far
as my long ago childhood and my freedom.
