One For D.L.

by Drury Brennan (17)

I never wanted the day when someone
loved me to come.
One afternoon, however-
it arrived on my doorstep
not bearing the sickle of death
or the Bible of a fanatic
but a gaudy silk dress with
worn Jack Purcells
and as we walked to my apartment
she told me she wanted to dress up
for me
but her mother said ditch the shoes.
Imploding like a lamprey
sucking itself to a violent death,
I walked with her in silent empathy
for then I had no choice
destroy love
give back twitches
mixed with love
and end it all.
