My Heart Beats Fast

by Nicole Woitowich (12)

my heart beats fast
beyond the shattered ruins of civilization
not knowing what to behold
each breath I take feels like I've been smothered in
the truth of reality
the eyes of humanity see my fear
and use it to there advantage
I cannot lose so they say
but knowing that the end is near
the ones who know have come so dear
"it is better to love and lost than never to love at
all"
I guess that's what's been said
does humanity have hope for the need of a girl to
cope?
the twisted mind
the broken glass
my bare feet bleed as I walk through the ancient ruins of those
shattered civilizations
hoping to see the truth in those who really care
not the lies that have been told throught the ages
the smiles that look down on me, are they illusions behind the pretty
faces?
I hope they see the meaning
I hope they see the truth
I hope they will remember me
for who I was
not the curse
or was it a dream
walking in the green field, with the friends of ages past
seeing the real thing
the real side of me
the one I am inside
the one who thinks nothing
of the one who takes her mind
another face, another year
another boy, another fear
but who cares about that now
for God's sake "I'm only 12"
I'll wait a few years longer
when my heart has gotten stronger...
