Lamentations

by Danny Merrifield (16)

Valentine came and went,
your face lingering on my mind.
Just another uneventful day,
spent alone,
wishing I could be near you.

Another day spent wishing to hear your voice,
see your smile,
kiss your lips.
But here I sit,
forlorn and exhausted,
by your absence....

What I wouldn’t give, baby,
to have just one more semblance of you,
one more laugh,
one more smile,
one more glimpse into your soul.

Take one look into my eyes, love,
and you shall see not a man,
but a monster....
Worn down by time
and passed over by love,
missing all life’s pleasures one by one by one.

Tell me, love, is it apt to feel the way I do about you?
Is it wrong to care the way I do?
Is it incongruous to wish you were by my side just once,
holding my hand,
whispering into my ear?
Is it gauche to wish happiness and peace
upon you?

Ah, love, I’ve spent far too many years wishing,
wanting...
lamenting about what I haven’t got.
Not enough time spent enjoying
the things I do have.

Love, can’t you see?
I wish you only the best.
I hope your heart beats blithely
in your breast.
I wish you well,
I wish you peace and passion
in all your years to come.
