Charade

by Christina Royall (16)

The moon has burned away
And you wake early to watch her sleep
Did you ever wonder if this is what you wanted?
Do you ever stop to think about where your dreams have gone?

And the face in the mirror isn't yours
The thoughts you think aren't the ones you feel
But still you let her sleep
Your life is a plastic window to consciousness
So roll over to escape the truth written behind your eyes

Alone in the pitch black dark
You're hot and sweaty and pretending this is what you want
Smile and swallow the welt in your throat
Tell yourself that it's dead so you can live

Look around, this is what you've become
Close your eyes and tell yourself you're blind
Still you let her sleep
Don't let yourself sit up and run
As you know you're aching to
Close the blinds and accept your pain
