Frequently Asked Questions About:
Yogyakarta
International School
Who can attend Y.I.S.?
Y.I.S. is permitted by the Indonesian Department of
Education to receive students of children who have foreign fathers and
who themselves hold a foreign passport and visa. Indonesian laws further
require that both child and father hold KIMS, or Diplomatic Visas.
Why can’t children with Indonesian
fathers attend the school?
Y.I.S. would gladly receive both Indonesian nationals
and children with expatriate mothers and Indonesian fathers, but again
the laws of Indonesia restrict us to those described above. Should these
laws change in the future, we will gladly receive any and all eligible
families.
Is Y.I.S. an American School?
No. Teachers at Y.I.S. have most often been recruited
from The United States and Australia, but the school holds no affiliation
with any nation besides Indonesia. This will continue to be the case as
we seek to maintain an international flavor. The curriculum used at Y.I.S.
is also from a variety of places, but finds the majority of its roots in
Australia. Again, we strive to create programs that open the minds of children
to the whole world and not just a small portion of it.
How much does it cost to go to Y.I.S.?
The fees for Y.I.S. are less than almost any other international
school in Indonesia. The cost for full-day students for one year is $6,000
and for half-day students is $4,000. There are no capital levies or hidden
charges. Apart from school uniforms and meals, Y.I.S. provides your child
with everything he or she needs to go to school.
Does Y.I.S. offer financial aid
or scholarships?
The Y.I.S. Constitution allows that a limited number
of families can be awarded "Reduced Tuition Fees" should the family meet
the pre-determined requirements. This reduction in fees was established
to assist families whose incomes are reduced greatly due to the kind of
work they do (ie. academic, religious, social). To apply for Reduced Tuition
Fees a family must request an application from
the school office and consult with the school’s Treasurer.
Does Y.I.S. offer programs for children
beyond grade six?
Yes, Y.I.S. will receive a limited number of children
in grades 7 and 8 who are working with an approved correspondence program.
The teacher in the Upper Primary Class will provide guidance for children
working independently through correspondence material purchased by parents.
We regret that we are not licensed or equipped to assist students in grades
9 – 12.
Do you have to speak English to
go to Y.I.S.?
The language of instruction at Y.I.S. is English, but
the school has always welcomed children from a variety of linguistic backgrounds
to attend the school. Among the teachers on our staff are fluent speakers
of French, Spanish and Bahasa Indonesia. ESL children are welcome at Y.I.S.
Should the need become sufficiently evident, additional ESL staff may be
added to assist children with the acquisition of language.
What about programs for small children?
Our Preparatory and Kindergarten program finds its focus
on children ranging in ages from three and a half to six and a-half-years
old. A half-day option is available for smaller children whose parents
wish to collect them at 12:00. Others may stay until 2:00 and will join
with the Middle Primary Class until 2:00.
Are facilities at Y.I.S. modern
and safe?
Y.I.S. has been located in the same facility since it
opened in 1989. The building was a newly-built home that has been adapted
to meet the needs of a small school. We have three classrooms, office space,
a library of over 2,000 volumes, a computer room, a kitchen, and western
toilets. Just down the sidewalk is our fenced in playground complete with
swings, jungle gym and a half-size basketball/volleyball court.
We welcome your questions and inquiries at the school
any time during business hours (7:30-2:30), Monday through Friday.
