Substitute Planning
Few are the teachers who do not fear having to be absent
and leave their class in the hands of a substitute. Few are the principals
who do not dread the days when enough substitutes to fill the classrooms
of absent teachers cannot be found.
Planning in advance for a substitute can help to give the teacher peace
of mind during an absence, provide the students with meaningful lessons,
and help the substitute have a successful and enjoyable experience that
will leave the substitute happy to return, thus making it easier to maintain
a supply of substitutes.
Creating a SUBSTITUTE' S BOX
A substitutes' box contains all that the substitute will
need packaged in an attractive Welcoming Box.
A box can be made from a heavy carton, such as those with removable covers
in which reams of 8 x 11 writing paper are shipped. You can then have students
help decorate the box with a welcome greeting for the substitute affixed
to the outside.
The box might contain some or all of the following: a couple of reams of
paper, a supply of sharpened pencils, pen, chalk, kleenex, hall passes,
goodnews card (or student commendation form), detention and/or referral
forms, updated seating charts and a copy of rollbook (never leave your
original), lesson plans with any necessary materials provided, a brief
discription of your classroom procedures and the names of any student helpers
.
