BRAIN GYM(R) WORKSHOP

What is Brain Gym(R)?/

This is the registered trademark name given to a series of exercises that you can do to "wake up" your whole brain before you need to use it. It presupposes that movement is an essential component of learning. In other words, learning is a whole-body experience not just a brain activity.

Who is it for?

It is for anyone who would like to optimize his or her learning and skill potential. It works well for all ages, not just children. Adults of any age can increase their scores on tests, their ability to learn and capacity to enjoy life. A recent study has found it can even cure depression.

Why do I need it?

Our environment is full of stresses to the body, such as neon lighting, sitting for long periods, eye-strain, thirst, computers and so forth that all contribute to imbalances in the body. The mind and body work together. When one is stressed, then naturally the other is also stressed. This reduces optimum learning. According to Dr. Carla Hannaford, "chronic exposure to stress inhibits full brain development." This can lead to learning problems which become labeled as "hyperactivity, (ADD or ADHD) disruptive behavior, learning difficulties, inappropriate behavior etc. " Many of you will know how distressing this can be.

How does it work-more or less?

The exercises are based upon several different sciences. One is neurobiology which means the information is based upon the way that neurons operate in the brain and the effect the body has upon these. Another incorporates information about energy meridians in the body from Chinese acupuncture. Many findings from brain and body research have been brought together with a practical goal of finding techniques that work for everyone.

When should I do it?

Whenever you find yourself stressed out and needing to calm down. Use it before a test, an interview, before studying... in other words, whenever you need all your capacities to be functioning fully, to do your best.

How can it help me?

It can help you study better, improve your test scores, read more effectively, write better papers, improve your motor skills, and be a more confident student and any other role you have to play.

How has it helped others?

The book Smart Moves by Dr. Carla Hannaford gives many stories of how much people have been helped. Charts indicate that some students in a few months have leapt several grade levels with Brain Gym. A child of 10, Amy, was unable to speak and limped. After 5 months of Brain Gym she was not only speaking but reading at grade level and playing soccer with the boys.

Where can I do it?

At any time if you have a few moments to think about it. Do it particularly before test taking or studying. It is an opportunity to tune in to yourself and find your center.

Why do I need water?

According to Dr. Paul Dennison, ..."water makes up about the same percentage of our bodies as it does of our planet... approximately 70 percent. And, since our bodies are continually using water, a conscious effort to maintain hydration by replacing lost water is vitally important. Because water is needed for virtually every biological process...it is crucial to mental and physical performance. ...water is the delivery system that gets oxygen to each cell of the brain and body. " So we need water to function better at everything.

What should I do now?

Think about your particular type of learning style. What would be the best way to take advantage of your dominant learning style, and help your weakest skill? Study the handouts, practice the "PACE" exercises and the "VAK" exercises. Find one that you particularly like and make a committment to doing it before every test, or before every study time. You will see results! Please let us know what you find out.
