-- REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA --

There are no Indult Latin Masses in Armenia. The country was evangelized in Apostolic times and has been Christian for at least 1,700 years. Most Armenians belong to the Armenian Apostolic Church, which has not been in communion either with Rome or the Eastern Orthodox Church since the Œcumenical Council of Chalcedon in 451.  But there has also been an Armenian Catholic Church since the eighteenth century.

During the period of communist heresy, the Armenian Catholic Church suffered   persecution but there has been a resurgence in it since the independence of the country in 1991.  There are now parishes at Panik, Medz Sebasar, Gümri, Arevig, Lantchig, Azadan, and Tachir.

An Ordinariate for Armenian-Rite Catholics in Armenia, Georgia and Eastern Europe is situated at Gümri (formerly Leninagrad).  It is subject to the superior jurisdiction of the Armenian Catholic Patriarch of Cilicia, who resides in Beirut, Lebanon.
